I've been told to "Take the S-Bahn" in Munich, what is it?

Travel Info
To get from the airport to my hotel, the hotel management emailed me that to take a taxi from airport would cost approximately 50 Euro's, or the "S-Bahn" (S1 or S8) for 8.80 Euro (45 minute trip). What does this mean to a guy just landing at the airport? Do I have to take a taxi to the S-Bahn? How far from the airport is 45 minute trip?

Any recommendations on where I should stay, as right now I'm booked at a place that has a reference from a past customer, on the internet, saying it is "a very poor choice" due to "it's closeness to the large Train Station".

Is there a name for a neighborhood that would be affordable and fairly pleasant? That way I could possibly ask a taxi driver to take me to a hotel in that neighborhood. I know how bus/train station neighborhoods are in other countries, and they tend to draw a "different" sort of clientele.

All I really want is a clean bed, private bathroom and shower.

Thank you in advance.

Hi :) S-Bahn is the subway. Be careful to take it in the right direction because its a little bit confusing. U should take a ticket from a machine before u get on it.

When i was to Munich 2 years ago my friends and i stayed in Etap hotel and we were very satisfied. The hotel was situated in a neighborhood which was very close to the center with the U-bahn ( there was a station near the hotel). The hotel was very cheap 50 euro per night for one room (we were 3 people in the room) and it has a private shower and bathroom, TV and it was extremely clean.

Here is a link to all Etap hotels in Munich:

Good luck and have fun in beautiful Munich :)

Best regards

"S-Bahn" means tube/Subway . The station is directly located in the airport . Another option might be the airport bus, which drives you to Munich Main Station.
For fares and travel times you should have a look at their website :

What is the name of yr hotel ? And how much is it ?
Normally , hotels have sound proof windows, if they are located in a noisy street .

So, if you need help, send me a mail to my nick at yahoo.de

have a nice day

Perhaps u can try googling up on the map below for some ideas on where the train station is located.Or try contacting the hotel to see if they offer airport transfers.Usually if the trains close to the airports,u can get a ride from those "buggy" to the train station. If not,u can always get info at the airport desk.Cabs can be rather expensive in Europe,so ur best bet wud be takin the trains & trams.

Regarding on where u shud stay,if its a budget hotel, there will always be good & bad points to it.So why dont u spend a night there,if u dont like it,u can always change hotels the next day.Not too sure bout the areas in Munich,so i wudnt wanna point u in the wrong direction blindly.U can always ask for info, when u land.I kinda got lost when i arrived at the airport in Germany too,but holding a map & askin around sorta pointed me to the right direction & purchasing the correct ticket.Next time i was there,i wanted to ask for what train to take but the airport reception told me that my hotel offers airport transfers,....so thank god for that coz i arrived on a late flight and it was already dark!LoL..But since ure gonna spend some time in Germany, u might as well get use to all the "Bahn's" there so that it wud roughly give u a reference when u explore around later.Hope it helps.Cheers! :)
S-Bahn: Local public transportation by train. Imagine the underground/metro/subway above ground and a bit faster.

Airport: Is located quite far out of town, so 45 minutes by S-Bahn is normal to just about anywhere mildly central in Munich. If you will be landing during the day, take the S-Bahn if you want to do downtown because with a taxi you could get stuck in horrid traffic (German word of the day: Stau, which is anything from stop-and-go traffic to gridlock). After about 7 pm it's better to go by taxi than by train.

Clean cheap hotel: I've always had good luck with Ibis, though I have never stayed at one in Munich. Go to http://www.ibishotel.com/ and type in the dates of your stay and Munich to see what comes up.

Neighbourhood: Schwabing would fit the bill of being affordable and fairly pleasant -- the neighbourhood is mainly inhabited by students and there are parks in the area, including the famous English park. It is also relatively convenient to the airport. There is an Ibis in this neighbourhood, with rooms costing around 70 Euro a night -- very reasonable for Munich.

If you decide to go for Schwabing, it would be best to take a taxi, even during the day. The airport is northeast of the city and Schwabing is north of downtown, so it's convenient. If you go for public transportation, you would need to get off the S-Bahn at Marienplatz and then get on the U-Bahn (this train is underground), line U6. The Ibis is about half a km from the the stop called Nordfriedhof.

As far as personal experience -- I have always stayed outside of Munich due to poor timing -- Oktoberfest. At the end of September all the hotels within a 30 mile radius of Munich are hopelessly sold out or overpriced or both. Never go there during Oktoberfest!

PS If you want more answers, possibly more qualified than mine, you can try posting this under the Germany section which is located directly under Travel. I also have no idea why Yahoo has put France and Germany on their own and not grouped them under Europe (Continental). Perhaps they are continents in and of themselves.

Viel Spass -- much fun
