First trip to Paris, what is the best way to call back to the States? |
Travel Info I am visiting Paris in July and am curious what some other travelers have done in terms of using calling cards. This is my first time out of the United States and Canada, and am wondering what international calling method to use to keep in touch with my family, job, etc. I'm only gone a week, so I'm really only looking for covering emergency kind of situations besides maybe a quick hi. Thanks Travel Tips If you're going with your laptop, definitely through the internet with a program like www.skype.com the best, in my opinion. It's a free messenger program, but it allows you to call every phones in the world for rates like 5 cents a minute. You just need a microphone you can buy at walmart for $5. If you're not going with a laptop, call att from the U.S and ask a card. They are the cheapest. Have fun in Paris, and don't pass a pastry shop without eating a cake, they're the best ! Others WARNING - Do not click Jessica R's link above. Its spam/advertising. If the only thing you are worrying about is an emergency then there is nothing you need do. They have public, coin operated, phone booths in France from which you can call the USA. Buying a phone card would be an utter waste of money for a one week trip. You can buy a phone card from the PTT (their version of the post office-- they also take care of phone services in France). The phone card can be used for calls to the US and Canada and even within France). In the past, they have even had commemorative phone cards so the card can even be a collector's item after you come home. If you are just going to be here for a week and don't need to call regularly, I would avoid purchasing a card. If you need to make a phone call, you can either call from the hotel very quickly and have the person in the States call you back, you can go to a 'phone parlour' where you pay for the time on the phone (these places are easily found in the less chic neighborhoods of Paris). If you manage to find a pay phone, which are becoming harder and harder to find with the advent of mobile phones, you can use your visa card, but it is pricey. American in Paris Don't go. When you get there you'll see why. |
