What interesting facts take place in Burgundy (Bourgogne) France? |
Travel Info I need to know some interesting and odd facts about Burgundy France. It's for a school project. Travel Tips During the middle ages the Dukes of Burgundy became so rich and so powerful that they rivaled the King of France who was both a blood relative and theoretically their feudal overlord. They acquired lands in addition to the present day Burgundy and controlled a long corridor stretching from modern day Belgium to Switzerland and Northern Italy. They thus had a trade route which linked the North Sea to the Mediterranean. They maintained their more or less independant status by switching alliances between the King of France and the King of England (who also claimed the throne of France). Their actions helped prolong the battles between the French and English kings into what is known as the Hundred Years War. It was the Burgundians who, in 1430, captured Joan of Arc and turned her over to the English who burned her at the stake. In 1477 the last duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold, was killed in a battle with the Swiss. He was said to have been split open from his head to his hips by one blow from a Swiss halbardier when his army was ambushed in a mountain pass. Others The capital of bourgogne is Dijon where they make lots of different types of mustard of various flavours. It is also home to the town of Beaune which is most famous for its hospice which dates back to the early 1400s. Gustav Eiffel was born and lived in Dijon, he designed the main market place in Dijon. Burgundy is also famous for its wines, including the Grand Cru Montrachet Alesia battle took place in Burgundy. That was the battle when Vercingetorix (the gauls headman) was beat by Caesar (roman army) You will find other stories in Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/burgundy... and if you're speaking french : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/histoire_de... Bon courage from France |
