Darmstadt is a city in the Land (state) of Hesse. It is about 35 km south of Frankfurt am Main and 35 km south west of Mainz.

Well all of that is right, but Darmstadt - literally translated as - Darm = Intestine or bowel, and Stadt = City, kind of gives you a hint of what to expect. Not to fear however, Frankfurt rocks and is close-by and if you can't get there from Frankfurt airport, you can't get there. Heidelberg is not far, and so are Taunus and Odenwald. There is also a Frankenstein castle not far from the Intestine City, so enjoy. Louisenplatz? that's really funny - wow, Darmstadt rocks - not!
Darmstadt is nice. I work there, so I am in Darmstadt at least 5 days a week. There is plenty to see and do in Darmstadt both during the day and at night. And I mean PLENTY. If you get tired of the city, you can go to some of the outlying areas (Dieburg, Munster, Pfungstadt, the Odenwald) for more great things to see and do.

Sure, Frankfurt is great if you're in to the BIG CITY thing. I personally hate it. Lots of skyscrapers and that rude city feeling everywhere you go. Darmstadt is a big city without the big city feeling. It may not be all skyscrapers and bunched together, but it's still a great place to be.
