I need something to see in Bavaria.?

I'm going to Munich in August for a class. I get in-country a day before the class starts and I leave two days after it ends, so I'd like some recommendations of someplace to see, preferably in Bavaria or maybe Baden-W眉rttemberg. I'm personally trying to decide between W眉rzburg, Bamberg, or Ingolstadt, but I need some help on making my final decision. Thanks in advance. My German is also very good, so something off the beaten path isn't too much of a problem, except for getting there.

Nah, skip Neushwanstein (sp) unless you are looking for the tourist traps. There are lots of different, more meaningful castles and such in Bavaria. Check out Linderhof, while the view isn't nearly as good, was where the King actually spent most of his time. Or Herrenchiemsee, which is where he drowned. If you do Herrenchiemsee, you can do it on your way to Salzburg- which I highly second that option.

However, Bamberg is one of my most favorite cities in Germany. The downtown is so picturesque and the rose garden at the castle is wonderful. A great town. It is an easy train ride from Wurzberg too. If you like seeing cathedrals and drinking dry wine do Wuerzburg. Also a wonderful town with lots to do and guess what- they also have a castle to tour- with wonderful views of the city. There is quite a lot to do in the surrounding area as you are near the beginning of the wine strasse.

If you choose to stay south of Munich, you can not go wrong with Garmish. The Zugspitz is a pretty amazing view and you can take the gondola to the top.

If I were you... I'd focus on Bamberg and if you have more time, take a regional train back to the airport and stop at any German village and enjoy it too.

The first thing a tourist should visit is Schlo脽 Neuschwannstein and it's sibling castle, Hoenschwangau. These are only an hour or so away from Munich. If you're history minded, Auschwitz is close by. Nuremburg is a great sightseeing city, and Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a fun destination that's not too far away.

But the most fun we had in Germany was just jumping in the car and heading out for points unknown. There's so much to see in the small towns and villages, and you can wander outbound and race back by Autobahn in most cases.

Baden-W眉rttemberg is a wonderful place too. More castles, and T眉bingen is a wonderful wandering-on-foot town. A drive anywhere through the Schw盲bish Alb is gorgeous, Nagold is marvelous Fachwerk small town nestled in the hills, and the Bodensee (Lake Constance) is worth a trip.

But if you only have a few days, stay close to Munich and enjoy the sightseeing rather than the driving. It's all lovely!
I agree with Brian E on most things except Ausschwitz. The concentration camp outside of Munich is in Dachau.

I'll also add that you could go to N眉rnberg. I assume since you said that getting places could be a problem that you are travelling by train so N眉rnberg is not far from Munich. Also, if you hop the border you could go to Salzburg, Austria. It's also a lovely city with a castle.

I've lived in southern Germany for 22 years.
I would recommend going to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberammergau in the Bavarian Alps. It's not too far from Munich and just gorgeous there. But wherever you end up going.....enjoy !
