I am from American and travelling to India for college. Would it be more convenient to purchase a laptop from? |
Travel Info America or from India? I know the currency is different, but does it make a difference? Also, anyone know any students travelling to India for college? Because I am super nervous and I really dont know what to expect. Especially since I just graduated two weeks ago from highschool and I'm entering medical school in a month. Plus the last time I went to India was three years ago for about two weeks ... So any advice would also be helpful. Thank you very much!! Travel Tips Hello:) ....nothing to worry.... The laptop-I have a feeling that you must try and buy it in India.Indian Customs are notorious for slapping on duty for goods bought outside India.Besides most products are available these days in India within a few weeks of their launch elsewhere. The laptop itself....i suggest you try and pickup something secondhand....because they are easier to dispose of when you do eventually decide to up and leave...you could always sell it to one of your fellow students and that wouldn't make a big dent in your pocket either. If you are going in for a new one please ask around for the best computer sales store in town, check out the models and sign an annual maintenance contract...that way if anything goes wrong....you always have a back up.In India things get done slowly sometimes and it can be extremely frustrating getting a simple thing repaired...if you pickup something from the U.S and it doesn't work in India then its practically useless. India itself-Ah!...what can i say:).....you've spent two weeks there so you have some inkling of what to expect.....the moment you step off that plane the sights, sounds and smells can be overwhelming....its different....but never dull:)).... You are going to be assailed by the cabbies at the airport who are going to riot when they see this green-horn firang(white-man) nervously clutching his bags and baggage.. .Heyyy....don't worry...always ask for a prepaid taxi at the counter...that way you pay a little extra but are saved the trouble og getting ripped off. The people- Indians are very friendly....sometimes you'll find complete strangers going out of their way to help you...sometimes you'll find conmen out to clean you out....but mostly wherever you go...you'll find them extremely hospitable....they'll invite you.... a complete stranger ...into their homes and treat you like royalty....on the flip side..Indians also have this habit of asking very personal questions...at first you'll find it unnnerving....but very soon you'll find yourself learning how to answer/parry them....."what brings you to india?"...."why aren't you married"...."do you have a girl-friend?"etc etc....try and make as many friens as you can....and beleive me Indians are only too happy to have a new friend amongst their midst...especially a firang.... Finally the writer Ruth Prawer Jhabwala mentions that all vistors to India go through typically a cycle...first it is "I love everything about India"....and then they move onto..."Maybe everything about india isn't so great"...to"I hate India" and finally again to "I love everything about India"....sometimes in just a day:)) Heres some additional reading material; William Dalrymple-At the court of the fish eyed goddess OM-Geoffrey Moorhouse Lonely Planet-India love it or hate it India is never boring.....:)...all the best...try and make as many friens as you can...you are gonna come back for more...guaranteed;) Others you should check out this site where you can get a sony vaio laptop for free http://www.parkedgorilla.info/?id=2...
