How much money is an appropriate for an Indian wedding gift? |
Travel Info A friend of mine is getting married in India and I understand that the traditional gift is cash. I'm fine with that - cash is useful. If this friend were getting married here in the U.S., I'd probably spend $100-200 on a gift. Is that an appropriate figure? Travel Tips It depends which social status your friend belong to. Now a days some Indian Business tycoon goes spending a million USD for a marriage by flying in guest from abroad. If you are part of that kind of an entourage, then probably $100 is just a peanut. If your friend belong to the so called middle class or upprer middle class, then $100 or $200 is just fine. If you gift by cash, add $1 to it and make it $101 or $201, that makes the gift perfect. Others yes i guess but 1 dollar is 43 rupees so that means if you give your friend a one $100 gift he would be getting 4300 rupees. If you give $200 he'll get 8600 rupees. The more you give the happier they'll be but the choice of money is up to you. When you convert your money into Indian currency I'd say it would be more than appropriate in normal circumstances. How much you give also depends on the status of the family. It depends on how wealthy they are - I mean this amount would be peanuts if your friend is rolling in money. If they are a really close friend $51 would be good but if ehy are not close friend I would give $21. The basic rule for gift giving is to give what you can comfortably afford and not what you think you ought to give. Having said that, if you are comfortable with a hundred dollars for a friend then give that. Further, it doesnt have to be cash. Nothing is carved in marble. It might be traditional for your friend to receive cash from immediate family etc. but there will still be lots of gifts from others that are store bought and appropriate for a wedding. Its really no different than, America, the more you give the happier they'll be. Just keep in mind that money here is not like money there, I'm not talking conversions, I'm sure you know that, but I mean if you give someone 100 dollars here, they may buy a couple things, while if you give 4300 rupees there, they can get a lot more. Oh, and if you do give U.S money, be sure to give them 1 dollar than the rounded number. Like the guy said above me, instead of giving 50, give 51, instead of giving 100, give 101. and so on. This means that the money will keep going and will never stop or something like that. idk My mom told me thats why, or soemthing like that Normally in India a gift of Rs. 1,000/ is considered to be reasonably good. for the friends.. Hence the gift equivalent to USD 100 to 200 ios defenitely very good. |
