Travel Info Can one tell me about Knock(Mayo?) ?thanks? Travel Tips Knock is a Marion Shrine.During the Irish Famine, when the staple crop of potatoes failed and people were starving two children witnessed the appearance of Our Lady at the Gable end of a church. The West of Ireland was very poor and depressed and this occurance was reckoned to be a "sign from above" of strength and support to aid people in the crises. The Pope visited Knock when he came to Ireland.People have claimed to be cured of serious illness at Knock by touching the Gable wall where Our Lady appeared. It rains a lot there bring a good weatherproof coat if contemplating a visit. Others Supposedly has a stue that bleeds or sheds tears, such a big tourist attraction it even has it's own aiport so you can see this bleeding statue . The Story of Knock began on the 21st August 1879 when Our Lady, St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist appeared at the south gable of Knock Parish Church. The apparition was witnessed by fifteen people, young and old. From this miraculous occurrence Knock has grown to the status of an internationally recognised Marian Shrine. The personal pilgrimage of Pope John Paul II in 1979, commemorating the centenary of the apparition, inspired an even greater devotion to the Shrine and endorsed the indelible seal of Vatican approval. Mother Teresa of Calcutta visited the Shrine in June of 1993. One and a half million pilgrims visit the Shrine annually. see below. www.knock-shrine.ie knock is a beautiful place to go, one of the women who saw the vision her brother died only a few years ago, pope john Paul was talking to him,and the original wall where they appeared, and so many thousands of Pilgrims attend every year,is dent in the wall where people kiss the part.and the statues are so nice,i love the place, and visit every time i go to ireland about 3times a year. Tacky, full of tacky shops selling plastic religeous items. Mary and baby Jesus, and baby Jesus`s eyes light up. That kind of thing. |
