It is called a 'bank holiday' and is the same as a public holiday in other countries. On these days banks close and also offices and schools. Nowadays shops don't normally close but they do open for shorter hours.

Bank holidays in Ireland are New Years Day (1Jan) St. Patricks Day (17 March) Good Friday(moveable and even the pubs close then) Easter Monday (moveable) first monday in May, first monday in June, first monday in august, last monday in October and Christmas Day and St. Stephens Day (25 and 26 December).

Hi, I think you mean a 'Bank Holiday'. That is when banks and other businnesses are closed and most schools too. We have one coming up on Monday the 4th of June. Ah a day off work and just chilling out!
Banks, businesses and schools are closed on bank holidays. The 1st Monday of May, June and August are all bank holidays, as are the first Monday after the 6th of January and Easter Monday, and probably a few more that I'm missing.
