How safe is Tegucigalpa, Honduras, for Americans? |
Travel Info I'm going to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, for business and I'd like to know if it's safe. Is it tourist-friendly or would I be a likely target for thiefs? Travel Tips As safe or unsafe as most Latin American capital cities. Common sense is the rule (no flashy jewelery, cell phones, purses, etc.) Carry as little cash as possible and a copy of your passport. Do not use public transportation (buses and shared cabs). Call a radio taxi (its cheap) or ask your hotel bell boy to send for one. You will definitely feel safer in residential areas where all 3-5 star hotels and restaurants are located (including embassies). Most museums are located downtown which is very crowded so you will be better off looking like a backpacker than a business person. There is very little anti-American sentiment in general but avoid talking about politics with locals. Grab a copy of Honduras Tips (English-Spanish tourist magazine) at any hotel and follow their tips on transportation, restaurants and things to do in town. Have fun! Others You will be OK, just stay away of obvious shady points. If you stay at the Hotels-Mall area you will be just fine. Do not worry that much, but just be cautions. The two answers you have been given are good advice. Travel in Honduras is like any where else know what's going on around and stay out of shady spots. Many of the travelers I know that had problems had been drinking, they are an easy target. Had it happen to me. |
