Travel Tips
Hi Cassie,
my predecessor has described his Paraguay trip hilariously, I couldn't help having a hearty laugh. Most facts on Paraguay are in the Wikipedia. I grew up there, and my view is a bit different. First off, the capital's name is ASUNCION, or, as the Spaniards named it originally, Nuestra Senora de la Santa Maria de Asuncion. Paraguay is South America's oldest country, and it has the most homogenous, ethnic make-up, with almost 100% Mestizos (Spanish-Native mix). It also has a sizeable population of Germans (I'm one), and of Japanese. The country is landlocked and has many waterways, the biggest of them the Rio Paraguay, and the Rio Parana. There are two distinct parts to Paraguay: The Chaco, and the rest of it. The Chaco, or Chaco Boreal, is shrubland and sparsely populated, but breeds beef of excellent quality, fetching premium prices. Asuncion is a cozy place with good shopping and nice restaurants, while the other big city, Ciudad del Este, renamed from Puerto Presidente Stroessner after his exiling to Brazil in 1987, is a bee-hive of commerce and illicit stuff, and a bit dangerous. The puente del amistad, or friendship bridge, between Paraguay and Brazil carries a constant stream of stolen goods and cars. Someone once called Paraguay a "Cleptocracy", because everyone steals everything, politicians included.
I love it there though. It's beautiful, calm, and lazy. Gorgeous flowers and blossoming trees year-round, cool animals, nice people, and a relaxed lifestyle. The food and drinks are fantastic. Especially typical is Yerba Mate, or Terere, a green tea which most people drink with a bombilla (silver straw with a sieve attached) from a bull's horn. Source(s): My home country.

Other Travel Tips
OK...I dont know much about paraguay but then no one does! when i backpacked in S. America 6 years ago we went into paraguay (ascension) to have a look! it was a little scary (I am very well travelled). they have never seen a tourist ever and probably have never spoken to anyone with a non-paraguayan accent. public transport was pretty non existent, accomodation (unless rented by the hour)! was pretty non existent and because of the lack of tourism the locals have no idea about any of the sights that a tourist may want to see, no idea of the history and just looked at us like we were freaks! also we had read that if you were caught looking at the palace you were shot instantly....which we thought was a load of bulls**t, however, we were not brave enough to look at the palace - which was really all there was to see there! This is only 1 persons experience and it was 6 years ago! Things may have changed! I think that if you look up Iguazu Falls, I am sure that they are on the 3 way border (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay) and (struggling to remember) something about they all share power provided by the waterfall but Paraguay does not use most of it so they sell it to the others...little vague but it was a while ago.
