How safe is Nicaragua Now?

Travel Info
I've been a few times and plan to go again in June with my church on a mission trip to Mulukuku. We plan to take some teenagers with us. Some people are telling me that since the political situation has changed they don't reccommend any of us going. I'm going anyway; but am concerned about the kids going. Any advice from someone that has been there recently or is living there now? Thanks

Travel Tips
It'll be perfectly fine to take teenagers with you. Yes the political situation can be unstable, but it's not violent. I was there last month and was there when Ortega came into office and there was nothing to worry about. So far Ortega has shown himself to be different than he was 15 years ago, so I don't think you or the kids will have anything to worry about. Source(s): I used to live in Nicaragua and was there last month

Other Travel Tips
my family lives there in Granada they say everything is fine for now but im supposed to go in summer too to visit but my parents are going to wait to buy the tickets to make its sure that its safe to go
My sister came from a visit there a week ago. She went to some small town with a school group and some cities there. It was perfectly fine. Everyone said the same thing to her (that it wasn't safe). She had a wonderful time, the people were friendly, and she never felt as if she were in a dangerous situation. People are often too paranoid.
Nicaragua is in a bit of a tumultuous political situation. But that doesn't mean that it is unsafe. I would be very very cautious. Make sure you keep your valuables close to you. Don't make a spectacle of yourselves (the fact that you are white will do that for you). Take cabs instead of walking long distances.

When I was there we had no problem. It just takes common sense. Stay safe.

And have a great time. It's a great country with great people! I love it.
Like any other country in Central America you should be careful... just as you would in parts of Los Angeles, New York or Washington D.C.

One of the world's wealthiest men just announced he is planning to invest $250 million in Nicaragua... so things are really beginning to look good.

I haven't heard anything bad about Nicaragua except from those who really have no clue at all what's going on there.

Go, be somewhat careful, don't walk in dark places at night and stay in groups when walking around... you should be fine.

Have fun!!
