Independent country used to be British Honduras.
Prior to that Guatemala had a claim on it and then Mexico also had a claim to it.Belize is an independent nation. It used to be part of the British Empire, that's the reason that English is their language.

If you have a look at the CIA World Factbook you will find that the Head of State is Queen Elizabeth II. Therefore, it is a colony of the UK (British Honduras).
