Travel Info Are belizeans mexicans, black, etc? Travel Tips Belizeans have mostly African roots, so I guess you can say black. They also have some French influence as evidenced by the Garifuna language. Belize is a melting pot of different cultures, but the majority, including the creole are of African descent. Belizeans cannot be categorically pinpointed as the influences are far ranging. Belizeans are not Mexican. Mexico and Guatemala have tried to claim Belize as their own, but it was an English colony and established independence in 1981. For Confused, there is nothing wrong with the word black. We have the creole,mestizo,maya,garifuna, east indians and many mixed cultures. Some are light colored some are dark colored skin. It varies.
