The first poster is correct, it used to be part of the British empire, until I believe it was the 80's but I'm not trusting my memory on a Monday morning haha. It was called British Honduras before Belize. I actually found that the natives mostly spoke Creole to each other, which is one of the coolest sounding languages I've ever heard! The above are right about it being an English colony. The only thing that I would add is that there are many languages besides English spoken in Belize. I was most surprised to find a good size Taiwanese community here. its very weird why they speak english...they dont really have an official language. The British came to Belize thinking that it was an island like the Bahamas. They settled in the land and they named it British Honduras (dont ask me why i saw it in a text book) then the spanish came and renamed it Belize but the British were there first so they wiped them off the land and kept the name and thats why its there today. But no one really knows why they speak english they must have another dilect since they speak it english with an accent. |
