What religion are the people who live close to the ruins of Lamanai in Belize? |
Travel Info Just curious. Travel Tips The Lamanai ruins are Mayan, but I doubt if very many - if any - Belizians still practice that indigenous religiion. While Belize officially does not have a "state" religion and the constitution provides for freedom of religion, the majority of the population is Christian, mainly Catholic with other denominations also represented. Source(s): State Department document: http://www.state.gov/g/drl/rls/irf/2003/... Other Travel Tips Christian or Indigenious religions As for people who still follow some part of the "Mayan" religion it seems to be concentrated to some small parts of Chiapas Mexico, and Guatemala. Belize is as the other people posted mainly various flavors of Christian. The three main groups are Anglican, Catholic and Mennonite (similar to Amish). Around Lamanai the local population tends to be more native American ancestry than the majority of the country, a lot more of the people there speak spanish instead of english, and tend to be Catholic, mainly due to migrations from Mexico in recent times. Just a few miles away the ruins the more "urban" Beliezians are a mix of international religions including Hindu, Islam and Garafuna. A large mennonite community also is nearby, the Mennonites are ethnicly of German descent. You might see some of them on the drive to the site. For the population of the country it is surprising how much religious and ethnic diversity there is. |
