Is travel to Belize a safe idea? What about Other Central American countries? |
Travel Info Is travel to Belize a safe idea? What about Other Central American countries? Travel Tips I am from the States and have lived in Belize for about two years. We have found Belize to be a very safe place and, has been mentioned in other comments, if there is a place to worry about it would be Belize City. However, we go to Belize City on a regular basis and as long as you stay in areas where there are many people around there should be no problems. Also, the biggest advantage with Belize is that it is English speaking so it is much easier to get around and communicate with others. We came through Mexico on our way to Belize and it a constant challenge to communicate with people and everything was many times more difficult because of the language barrier. This is all to say that Belize is great. Come and there are many great things to see and do. Others I believe it is. Also other Central American countries are safe, except perhaps El Salvador. Check this out: http://www.expatexchange.com/trvall.cfm?... It warns you against unsafe places to visit. Like any country there are safe parts and dangerous parts. Belize City has a notable crime problem, but there is little reason to stay there or visit as a tourist. Most likely you will only get robbed and not hurt though. As for other Central American countries, parts of Guatemala and Panama have bad reputations for crime some of it deserved. The popular tourist resorts/spots are generally safe though, it is reasonable to be carefull about haveing things stolen. Watch your valuables, many of the locals are very poor and the temptation of an expensive camera or a wallet may be too much for them. Some tourist items could easily be as much as a year salary for them. I have traveled to all of the countries of Central america, and been burglarized a couple of times, but never directly threatened. El Salvador is as safe as any of the countries now. Probably the safest is Costa Rica, followed by Nicaragua, but any country can have it's good and bad parts. In general, Costa Rica and Belize are the safest countries in Central America. I would avoid El Salvador and Guatemala. Panama should be okay. Don't know much about Honduras. At this point, Nicaragua is okay. But if the new President decides to become the Hugo Chavez of Central America, I would avoid traveling there. All of Central America is safe enough for travel if you use common sense much as you would anywhere else. I live in Honduras I'm panamanian but I must admit we have crime problems but no SO STRONG EL SALVADOR= TOTTALY UNSAFE HONDURAS AND GUATEMALA=UNSAFE NICARAGUA AND PANAMA= HAVE PROBLEMS BUT THEY'RE 70% SAFE COSTA RICA=80% SAFE BELIZE... I don't know |
