They called them Jibaros in Puerto Rico. There is a famous song called "El jibarito" (or Lamento borincano) written by Rafael Hernandez (Puerto Rican) and the chorus goes like this:

Y ALEGRE EL JIBARITO VA CANTANDO ASI
DICIENDO ASI, PENSANDO ASI POR EL CAMINO
SI YO VENDO MI CARGA MI DIOS QUERIDO
UN TRAJE A MI VIEJITA LE VOY A COMPRAR
