Been to Rio de Janerio?

Travel Info
Okay I'm considering going to Rio but everyone is saying not to go because it's unsafe. Is it really that bad? Any tips if i go anyway?

Travel Tips
I've been twice and it's as dangerous as any other city in the world. You are not going to visit the favelas (shanty towns) and are not going to flash around the fact that you're a tourist! I stayed first in Sheraton Leblon and then Praia Ipanema. Both Leblon and Ipanema are the best neighbourhoods and they're quite safe. Dont walk alone and at night, stick to the areas where there are people, go in tour buses everywhere and enjoy the city. Rio is a magical place and last time I went to New years and it was very safe. First time I went with my 2 sisters (three 30 year old alone) and last time with 2 friends.
People havebeen robbed in London or Paris and not because its Rio it a bad place. Both my experiences were great and if I can, I'll go a third or even fourth time!
Others
I've been many times and nothing happens if you follow some simple rules: dress simple. don't carry expensive (or look alike) jewelry or cameras.don't take taxis if they are not call by the hotel, tour with other people, stay in Ipanema or Leblon or Sao Conrado. This way you can visit even the old part of Rio, with no consequences
