Is it particularly dangerous to visit Mexico right now?

My family heard that many tourists have been kidnapped in Mexico lately and that it would be wise to avoid it on holiday in the near future.

It is safe... if you stay away from the nasty areas...

I am sick and tired of people saying these things about Mexico. ok... let me do it the other way around

they kill tourists in rest areas in FL
they kill innocent bystanders in shopping centers
they kill people coming out of Mc D's
they rape and kill girls in schools

everyone tells me it is dangerous to visit any or all of these:

NYC
Miami
Los Angels
San Francisco
Houston
Philadelphia
....

I still travel to the US and visit some of these places... just have to be careful.
