Most mexicans are mestizo?

Travel Info
i thought most mexicans are a mixture of spaniard and indian

Travel Tips
You're right, they are. However, there remains a population of pure indigenous people. They're mainly in the south, but they're not all from the same group and they're scatted around. Some, for example, are Mayans, living in villages like San Juan Chamula.

Then there are those that immigrated after Cortez. Post world war, a lot of Europeans from many countries went to live in Mexico, so there's another subculture there.

Others
yes, they are. but there ares still pockets of native peoples, such as the person above said...and also pure "spaniard" as well. i think mexicans really surprise americans sometimes...you can find many blonde hair/blue eyed mexicans, as well as red hair with freckles, 6ft. and over, etc.... many mexicans look italian (or what americans would think of as italian)
Yes, most of us are mestizos, but as the other respondents said, the mixture is so diluted you can hardly tell the proportions. In terms of skin tone, most of us are olive skinned, but yes, I have blonde and redhead friends who are pure mexicans. In urban areas, I do not think you can find anyone with a 50/50 proportion of european and native american. And there is an african component too, so the mixture is quite varied!
One other thing is that over the centuries many Indians adopted teh Spanish language and "Hispanic" culture and became part of the mestizo population, this means that mestizo is also a cultural label - someone cane be nearly all Indian by ancestry but if they don't speak an Indian language and are not part of an Indian community, they may be considered mestizos.

There are other elements in the mixture, African and Asian, and other Europeans, and even Lebanese.
So just to make it clear for you most mexicans in mexico are light comlpected and at an avarage height to that of americans since mexico got colonized by the spanish and most indigenous people died of disease and very few meztisos were born since spanish at the time were racist and believed in "pure race" and viewed indigenous women as not human. The meztisos started to become more numerous after the 19th century when the spanish empire fell in mexico and the ideology of "pure race" set by the spanish in mexico started to die out. Meztiso is a type of people wich is very recent probably only like 100 years old at the most and it is still not the dominant race in mexico but it is a large minority wich compromises almost half of the mexican population, here is some ethnic information about mexico's ethnic groups: European { mostly from spanish } 51%, Meztiso { from mixed race of European and Indigenous } 44%, Indigenous 3%, Other 2%. Note that Mexican indigenous people, and Mexican meztisos are more numerous in the U.S.A. since they have prospered better than in Mexico and prefer to live there than in their own country.
