Both are fantastic choices, it all depends on what your looking for, both have great hotels, I would join a forum and talk to others who may be asking themselves the same question.

Cozumel is a dump!!!! I've been there and will never go again. I don't know about the other place, though. Consider Cancun, its pretty.
I have heard mixed reviews about Cozumel. Even from one person who lived there for a year. My husband and I enjoy going to Riviera Maya. We usually go to Moon Palace. I prefer it there because we have free trips included. I have been to their ruins (Chichin-Itza, Coba, and Tulum .... and if you go to Tulum take a bathing suit, the beach there is wonderful). We also always make it to Isla Mujeras (the boat ride is half the fun). If your go to one of the palace resorts hotels, many of their trips also include lunch!

Enjoy your trip!
