Does anyone have advice with volunteering at an orphanage in Mexico or Latin America?

Travel Info
I'd like to spend the summer volunteering and improving my Spanish but I've had difficulty getting anything lined up. I'd rather not pay a company so that I can volunteer.

Some of my Friends are going every summer to Guatemala to the Hogar Rafael Ayau. There are doctors, students, etc that are annually going to this Orphanage for boys and girls. They have a web site that you can check :http://www.hogarafaelayau.org/
There you can also find other info in regard to the work
Generally mission work to the orphan is arranged through Mission Office, if you are interested in mission work at the orphanage it is recommended to contact Madre Ivonne at nunivon@ufm.edu.gt
It is safe, and the sisters as well as the kids are very friendly and loving.
This is a very noble thought. Good luck in your endeavor!
Try the Centro Biling眉e in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. They are a language school and have volunteer opportunities in the orphanages there:

The program is aimed at teens, but I'm sure the director can help you out if you're not a teen. I'm sure she will want you to take courses through their program, which will definitely help you with your Spanish!

The other thing you could do in San Miguel de Allende is volunteer to teach English at the Biblioteca P煤blica. It's run by gringos who live there/have retired there. (BTW, in San Miguel, "gringo" is not used as a derogatory term!) They raise money to pay for becas (scholarships) for students to attend private secondary schools and colleges.

Now is a good time to be looking. The spots at the Centro Biling眉e start filling up by May!
Spent 3 summers in San Miguel de Allende---loved it and the wonderful people!!!
The Salvation Army has orphanages all over Mexico but in reality most of their children come from poor Mexican families and spend the summer at home with the family. You could check with the local Salvation Army and they can help. You don't have to pay to volunteer for them (except transportation and personal expenses) and I am sure they could use some help with the few kids (orphans) they house during the summer. It would be a great way to learn Spanish. I know several people who have worked there (mostly from England) and they loved the experience. Good luck.
