No if you are driving but you need a valid photo ID and your birth certificate. If you are flying you need a passport.

I think you do now. In the past you may not have needed one to cross into Mexico or Canada, but a state-issued driver's license would have worked. If you are planning a trip to Mexico or Canada today, you should go ahead and get a US passport. Some Post Offices will take passport applications, but usually only during certain hours. Currently, you must have a passport to fly into Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, and back into the US.

By June 2009, we are expected to have passports in order to drive or walk into Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and back again.
