Driving from SD to Rosarito? Safe?

Travel Info
I live in San Diego and want to go on vacation with my family to Rosarito...do you think its safe to drive there? I've heard all kinds of scary police stories and dont want to risk it if I have a 4 year old? Any opinions? What is there to do in Rosarito besides drink Margaritas and eat seafood? :)

Travel Tips
I just got back from Rosarito on Friday. Don't believe all the stories you hear. We had an encounter with a police officer because my car did not have a license plate on the front. He was polite and and did not give us any problems. We informed him we were from Arizona and we only get issued one plate, he told us to be careful and enjoy our trip. I had my 2yr old and 3yr old with me they had a blast. We passed soldiers everyday through a check point. No problems there either (pass right on through.) Try taking your child for a horse ride you'll enjoy it and it's only $10.00.

Others
Your 4 yr old will have a blast playing on the beach. It's about a 2+ hr drive from S.D. depending on the border traffic. Roserito is a great family place to kick back.

Just have a great time & enjoy Mexico . . .
ignore anyone who says it is dangerous. it is no more dangerous than any other city in the US, except maybe Detroit. enjoy your time there and say hi to a few of my relatives!
p.s. I hope you know spanish though, it will come in handy!
is very safe, when you get out on I-5 keep going straight and you'll see a sign which you'll take that road and I think you paid about a dollar or less to get on it and you'll be there in 30 minutes, you want to stay out side of rosarito if you have kids and you don't want them to see girls gone wild!!! there is a few nice 5 stars hotels before you get to town, if you drive another 20 minutes you'll be in Ensenada and the town is more family friendly, there is a nice hotel call DEL SOL, which is very small and nice and and very close to everything, remember to bargain and don't pay what they ask you, the rule is pay of what they ask you for. ps. roads are 3 to 4 lines wide, very nice scenery. don't believe scary stories if you break the law they will get you.
Kids always have fun on the beach. The old Rosarito Beach Hotel has some activities for kids, big swimming pool, grass lawn. Perfectly safe, a great walking town...the pinata store is a fairy land for kids all their favorite cartoon characters are there. There was a pony ride rental there a few weeks ago.
It is super easy to drive to Rosarito. Just dont speed or run red lights and you will be fine. Rosarito is located 30 minutes south of San Diego, just across the Mexican border on the Pacific coast of the Baja peninsula. Downtown Rosarito is only 18 miles from the border via the Rosarito-Tijuana Scenic Road. The tolls are usually less than $3, and you should only have to pay one to get to Rosarito. You U.S. insurance is not valid in Mexico, for this reason it is wise that you purchase Mexico Insurance. You can buy insurance online from www.mexbound.com Make sure to stop at Puerto Nuevo and get lobsters. Puerto Nuevo is a must stop. Do a search in google for Puerto Nuevo Mexico and you will see this small town located 8 miles south of Rosarito
