Until Jan 2008 or later, no.

You DO need proof of citizenship to re-enter the U.S., but for now that can be a birth certificate. (travel by land and sea only .. passports needed for ALL travel by air)

No - you can LEAVE the country without a passport.

BUT - if you want to come back in - YOU BETTER HAVE IT - the rules have changed. It used to be you only needed your driver's license. With the beefed up DHS rules, you need a passport to cross back into the country.

Otherwise, hook up with some illegal immigrants crossing the border in Texas or something and make a run for it back into the US. Better be quick, if they catch you, they will deport you back to Mexico!
