Family tours of the yucatan?

Travel Info
I am looking for a family tour of the Mayan region of Mexico with my children aged 5 and 7. I would like this trip to be educationl in terms of learning Mayan history. Please reply if you had a great experience with a tour operator or travel agent.

Travel Tips
One of the best ways to learn about Mayan history is to visit the out of the way spots. One of these is Holbox, a small island at the very N. of the Yucatan. One can take a launch to grt there from the mainland. You leave your vehicle on the mainland.
Another way is to talk to the local Mayans in places like Tulum. A lot involved in the tourist industry speak English & thet sometimes invite interested families into their homes. Be sure to take all the used clothes that your children have outgrown to leave with them. If the family has an infant buy some Pampers to leave with them
You will be suprised how much they will open up if treated right. Source(s): http://www.travelyucatan.com/trans-1.htm...

i lived 8 yrs close to Tulum & Playa

Other Travel Tips
It all depends where you are staying exactly.
If you want to combine a beach holiday with some historical sites, i suggest an all inclusive package either in Cancun or further south in the Yucatan peninsula.
When I went to Cancun, through the hotel and Olympus tours, we wen to Chichen Itza on a coach, with a tour guide and lunch was included. it is a 3 hour journey each way though. Alternatively you can hire a car and drive there yourself as friends of mine did. There are plenty of sites with ancient ruins, and I believe tour guides can be hired once there.
If you stay in cancun there is also lots of other fun things to do, Especially the water park and swim with the dolphins.

May I also suggest a hotel that has baby sitting, a night at Coco Bongos club is not to be missed if you want to let your hair down!
Not sure where you are so can't recommend a travel company, but for an idea of what's out there, look at thomson.co.uk
We loved X-caret. This is an eco-archaeological theme park. They have a Mayan village, swim with the dolphins, made man beach, restaurants, lockers, underground snorkel river. A very educational and fun place. Go to this website for more information.

Also check out Isla Contoy. It's a reserve and park

Most hotels also have tour desks, they help you and make reservations for you when you get to Mexico. Best to research now and than make reservations when you get there. You will know the weather conditions.

Have a fun trip and good luck
