Visa or American Express in Mexico?

Travel Info
I am leaving for Mexico in a few weeks (Baja California-Tijuana, Ensenada etc) and am debating to change all my money over before I cross the border, to take a prepaid visa or a prepaid American Express or travelers checks or card. I haven't been to this part of Mexico before and don't know the safest and easiest way to change money there. Thanks!

Some prepaid card charge an annual fee for ownership. A big plus with theThe All Access庐 Prepaid Visa庐 Card is that it has no annual fee. This will help the owner save some money. Prepaid cards are frequently used to withdraw cash from ATM's. If you withdraw cash using U.S. ATM's by your All Access庐 Prepaid Visa庐 Card the cash advance fee of $2 will be charged and if you are using an international ATM for the same purpose $4.95 will be charged for every transaction. When you apply for The All Access庐 Prepaid Visa庐 Card there is an application fee of $9.95 to be paid. When you participate in the All Access庐 Prepaid Visa庐 Card program a participation fee of $9.95 per month is charged on your account. The prepaid card owner has an option to pay per transaction also in which case the participation fee can be waived.

The All Access庐 Prepaid Visa庐 Card provides various ways of reloading. Depending on each option there are various fees to be paid. If you reload via direct deposits or PayPal transfers the reloading is free or costs you $0, if you use ACH, credit or debit card transfers there is a reloading fees of $4.95 and if you want to reload your credit card in person with retail cash the reloading fees vary by merchant location.

If you don't use your All Access庐 Prepaid Visa庐 Card for a certain amount as mentioned in the terms and conditions associated with the debit card there is an inactivity fees of $5.95 to be paid to the prepaid card company. Overall this prepaid card has lots of good features but the fees associated with it makes it a bit costly option to have. Read more from: http://www.credit-card-gallery.com/prepa...

im thinkin travlers checks because if anything happens to them they can be replaced if you loose them
i live in Tijuana and i can tell you that it's hard to cash a travelers check and credit cards are taken in most businesses and are safe now so you should be o.k. with that or maybe you could bring some travelers checks and a credit card.
i think visa is your best bet since most businesses take it.
just remember that should you need to take money out of an ATM in mexico you will only be getting it in pesos (mex. currancy) so just keep in mind that 20 dlls is about 200 pesos i'm telling you this because i've seen americans going to ATM's and punching 20 and think they're getting dollars so they get confused, the least amount of money you can take out of an ATM here is 50 pesos which a little less than 5 dollars.
so good luck and enjoy your stay here.
Traveler checks are really not necessary nowadays in Mexico. Given the location you're going to, I would say to carry little cash and just use your VISA card (AMEX is not taken everywhere). Even if you don't take a prepaid one, just take the necessary precautions (including having phone numbers handy in case it does get stolen or lost).
I have been to Mexico 3 times in the last 2 years and have never used travelers checks. Most places take credit cards, and if they don't, ATMs are readily available. I just returned from Playa del Carmen today, and found that almost all places took Visa, while only some places took American Express (its commercials are misleading--MANY places worldwide do not accept American Express, and I've had great luck using Visa). Prepaid cards are a great way to go. Good luck!
atms will give you the best exchange rate, travelers checks are antiquated
Both cards are welcome in mexico, not every where accept american express specially in small business. Visa every where.
