By all means, FLY. If you drive, be forewarned the fact that driving in Mexico is VERY hectic, and heaven forbid you getting into an accident. In Mexico, it makes no difference whether it was your fault or not. A car wreck in Mexico is a criminal offense. In other words, you and the other driver both get a one-way ticket to the Mexican jail.

from where to where. when we were in san diego we drove to a parking lot on the us side and walked over to Tijuana. I would probably fly more than i would drive there.
It depends on where you are and where you want to go.

If you live in texas, arizona, or new mexico.. Probably easier to drive, but at the same time if you're going in any further than what you can get by walking accross the border and leaving your car on the US side i'd say fly. You really don't want to drive your car into mexico unless it's a real beater and worth practically nothing. And if it is, take out the most insurance you can get on it at the border and hope someone steals it. :)

Otherwise if you live somewhere like in montana you probably want to fly.
fly. and when you get through customs avoid the timeshare sales people the officials will direct you towards... have your travel to your hotel pre-planned before you leave.
