Is it safe to travel to the Yucatan peninsula? |
Travel Info I hear that I shouldnt go... but it seems like a cool area. Travel Tips of course!! pretty safe, there are just some areas that are called "zapatista" but don't worry you wont go there. just get there and you're cool, you'll know where to go and where not to. it's not a warzone or anything, at most the zapatistas could now be considered (metaphorically) to like a sindicate, they're on a strike against the government, but no longer shooting any gun. im mexican so english is obviously not my first language so if i didn't make sense just know that the area is awesome and you'll have a great time there. Others It is perfectly safe to go there, indeed thousands go to Cancun and the Mayan Riviera every year. There are cool places further inland. This is a place where there is great proverty, and you are, by comparison, very rich. So do keep your head about you and keep an eye on money, wallet, purse, etc. Petty theft against tourists happens everywhere, but if you are prepared and keeping an eye open you will be able to reduce drastically your chances of being a victim. A money belt is a good idea. There is some concern about the food being safe. A Hep A-B vaccine before going makes huge sense, and it's important not to eat uncooked fresh vegetables or fruits that you cannot peel. They can be contaminated, although likely the worst you would get is some Montezuma's revenge, which is no picnic. That said, it's a very safe place to go, that said it is not as safe as most of the US. More details in the US State Department's consular information sheet on Mexico. Even then, I would really watch yourself.. That is not the U.S. You would be on your own.. ( I like your name ) Also, it is not cool... You'll need MUCHO SUN LOTION. Also stuff for sand fleas.
