What was your experience like at Tulum, Mexico?

Travel Info
I am going to Tulum this July 4th and want to know where to go and what things to do. Thanks!

Travel Tips
I really like Tulum, my wife and I have stayed in that Tulum to Playa del Carmen area many times.

I think the ruins and the beach at Tulum are just beautiful, but the ruins themselves are almost always busy.

We both like Playa del Carmen very much too. My wife especially likes the shopping there. There are also many cool bars and restaurants. For us, It's just a fun place to be. There is a ton of things to do in the area, we've been many times and still haven't done everything that we would like too.

Are you there for a week or two, on a resort or are you in only for a day on a cruise ship?

Edit:

Since it's more than a few hours here's some more details:

My wife and I stayed at that same resort a couple of years back when it was called Sunscape Tulum. They had spa services that were pretty nice, they were about the same as you'd pay at a spa here maybe slightly cheaper, I think a massage would run you about $50-75, I can't really remember. The staff were very friendly.

The resort entertainment staff did a morning bicycle tour to the ruins, it was free but you need to pay to get into the ruins ($38 pesos last time I was there) and if you want a guide then I think that's about $25, but you can split that with another couple. They also used to show movies and sports on the beach at night, if you didn't want to see the shows that they put on. I'm not sure if they still do that but it's pretty cool to sit out on a beach chair and watch a movie. (Bring bug spray, not sure if you always need it but you sure did when we were there (Oct.) at least on the beach at night)

Also, you'll want to go to Playa del Carmen to check that out. If you want to go during the day for shopping or sight seeing, don't take a cab, they have colectivos (white mini vans that operate like shared taxis) that run from Tulum to Playa Del Carmen, you just need to walk to the road and flag one down. That will get you to PDC for about $50 pesos, maybe less.

There's a Sams club in PDC so if you are a member in Canada or the States, bring your card, it's likely the cheapest place to by tequila. If you are not a member of Sam's and looking for tequila, there's a liquor store at Constituyentes (sp?) Ave. and the Highway (307) that seemed to have good prices too. It's kind of hard to get to though if you are not driving since most of the time your are going to be around 5th ave and it's a bit of a hike from there.

The resort also ran a tour once a week where they took people to Cancun to a night club, not sure if they still do that but if that's your thing than you might want to ask about that. I think it was Cancun anyway - It may have been PDC, not sure I didn't go - I'm not much of a clubber.

Also, from PDC you can catch a ferry to Cozumel, if you wan to check that out. Right off the ferry doc you'll see snorkel/fishing/diving tours.

When you land at the Cancun Airport, there will be people handing out little white bags with a booklet in them called "Cancun Tips" (or something like that) ask for the Mayan Riviera edition. It has lots of coupons and tons of info on things to do in the area and it's free.

Lastly, the bus ride from the airport can be long it's about 80 minutes or so, may be longer if your bus is dropping off at other resorts along the way. For me, I'd buy a beer from one of the venders outside the airport just for the ride. Not that I need a beer for a 90 minute ride but I just like to do it because for me it kind of signals that I've started my vacation.

If you are interested in ruins feel free to email me and I'll give you the low down on some others in the area. Have a good time, there's lots to do in the area.
Others
Tulum is beautiful, but hot due to no place to hide from the sun. Other place to see are Xel-ha, which is an eco-park that has many different things to do. Don't forget about Xcaret eco-park also. Between the two of them you will see everything that the Yucatan has to offer. If you have not decide on a resort yet, I would recommend the Occidental Grand Xcaret. Set in a natural jungle setting, it is the best resort I have found in that area.
