Can anyone tell me about Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan.?

Travel Info
Are they're a lot of American tourists there? Is it safe? How are the locals? I'm an Asian-American hoping to travel there over the summer. I live in New York, which I think is a pretty safe city. I've heard a lot of bad things about Mexico. Can anyone tell me anything about Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan. Thanks!

Travel Tips
Lazaro Cardenas is not a very popular destination even with the natives down there. I lived in Morelia, Michoacan for many years and I only went to Lazaro once. I've been to Playa Azul and the waters are much better there. Yes, you would stick out like a sore thumb down there but never-the-less, people are still friendly and knowing some Spanish will go a LONG way in this case... not a very popular American tourist destination...

In sayinh that, right now things aren't looking too well in the southern part of Michoacan, hence Lazaro. Morelia is very nice and safe, even Uruapan, which is about 1 hour south/southwest. Everything else is pretty much "play at your own risk", in this case, very high risk. With the Feds hittin the US/Mexico border towns hard these last few years (along the Rio Grande/Gulf Coast), much of the organized crime and drug cartels have moved to Michoacan, specifically in the rural south part of the state. Civilian deaths, ransoms, police killings, robbery, weapons bust, drug busts, have all dramatically increased. I can direct you to articles and articles of this stuff (all in Spanish though) and it will make you think thrice about going. As an American and as a Mexican citizen, I don't recommend that you go that route; stick to the more secured and safe havens (such as Morelia) if you intend to visit that particular part of the country. The events that take place on the Mexican beaches that you hear about are only the topping of the cake; the real hardcore stuff happens in places like southern Michoacan that you don't get to read on the paper or on Yahoo news. Source(s): Been there, done that; not worth it. Just came back from southern Michoacan 2 months ago; even I lived in fear those few days I was there (visiting grandparents).
Other Travel Tips
I am an American who has been in Lazero for the last 2 weeks. I think things have calmed down here for the most part.

One thing you should realize is that most people don't speak any english. If you speak spanish, I think you'd be ok, but if you don't it may be a bit risky.

hey i am from michoacan expect is called morelia u should go over there instead there is alot to do like museums and the cathedral are made in gold from the inside there is alot of tourism there i think you are going to enjoy it!! so change ur mind and go to MORELIA is so beautiful!
