How can I get a copy of birth certificate in mexico without having to pay an arm and a leg for it?

Go to the Mexican Consulate in your local city. or try online with the Mexican goverment site.

If you're lucky, maybe the person was born in a state that lets you order copies trough the web at the page I reference (Zacatecas and Michoacan, if I'm not mistaken).

Besides I don't think it would be much expensive to get a copy if you know someone in the location the person was born, I would say it's less than US$ 50 including DHL or FedEx document shipping.

Those certificates costs 70 pesos at the civil register , add something for the shipping shouldnt be that expansive
70 pesos is 7 dollars, so isn't an arm or a leg as the person in this question claims
驴That person is mexican?, try this mexican government page (sorry is in spanish). You will have to give some numbers of your certificate and pay. They will send it to you via mail. But check your status.
