Do my kids and myself need a passport if we are going to Mexico by land? |
Travel Info I'm want to go to Mexico next month, but I don't know if we really need to get a passport if I'm going and coming back by car. Travel Tips I see you got Three WRONG answers!!! No...you do Not need a passport to travel by car to and from mexico until Jan. 2008. Now...If you are taking your children to Mexico alone...without ther other parent, you MUST have a notarized letter from the other parent giving permssion to take the children out of the country. If you get passports in the future BOTH parents must be present to get the passports for the children. Right now passports are required for travel to and from Mexico by AIR only. You must have certified copies of birth certificates for each of you and a picture I. D. for yourself. Good to have additional forms of ID for the kids too. If you have Sole legal and physical custody of the children and have the documentation to prove it you do not need the letter of permission. My ex husband wanted to take the kids to Mexico this summer and I told him no. Personal experacne. They're requiring passports for flights and cars now - new rule that recently took effect. I'm going with others at the end of the month (plane) and one of the people still doesn't have her passport after applying over 2 months ago - a huge backlog due to this new rule. She has been told that they'll probably let her through with her birth certificate and a receipt from the passport agency, but we won't know until we try. Another thing you may need is a notarized letter from the other parent (or proof you have sole custody) giving permission for you to bring the kids into Mexico.
