Best summer spot in Mexico? |
Travel Info I am looking into a 1-2 week vacation this summer. I have been to Mexico several times, but only in winter or Spring. I would like warm, but not humid temperatures (maybe in the 80's), and preferably no rain. Places I've been to and enjoyed include Cuernavaca (kind of near and dear to my heart as I lived there for 4 months), Puebla, Puerto Vallarta, San Miguel de Allende, and places I'm interested in seeing are Zijuatanejo.Ixtapa, Patzcuaro, Oaxaca. Others? Travel Tips I have been to many parts of Mexico. Like you, I spent a lot of time in Cuernavaca (did you go to Taxco?). Here are my favorite places. Best of all, Oaxaca. Nice weather. Fun shopping as well as having a beer in Zocalo. Very small-feeling city and has always been very friendly. Wonderful Mercado de Abastos near the bus station as well as the Mercado for tourists near the Zocalo. Market days in surrounding towns are fun, especially Tlacolula (Sunday, can catch bus at bus station). Mitla and Monte Alban are great archaeological sites. Next on my list is Guanajuato. Lovely university town with nearby silver mine, lovely jardines and good food. We did a day trip to San Miguel -- too many Americans for our tastes, but it is a pretty place, but not as lively or picturesque as Guanajuato. Then I like Patzcuaro. It is a smallish-feeling village but it is interesting and it has a very colonial feel. We didin't find terribly much to do after a couple of days, but it is a lovely place to relax and enjoy Mexico, largely free of hordes of tourists. If you go, you might go to Janitzio, place of Day of teh Dead celebrations, but we found the island a little dull off the Day of teh Dead -- lots of steps to climb to get to the monument and shop after shop with very similar and not very interesting wares. Odd given the potential of the place. San Cristobal de las Casas is a bit remote, but it is an interesting, largely indigenous village that is well worth the trip. I am not a beach person -- too many gringos and hot in summer. Others Acapulco good food Playa Del Carmen. It is in the Yucatan close to Cancun but less crowded with tourists. Most people head straight to Cancun so Playa might be a nicer vacation spot. I would say Cabo San Lucas, umm then you travel away for it to some of the other towns around it. Beaches are pretty clean and it still has that small town feel to it. Great rates on hotels and some of the best fishing I think. Been there done that. at the moment i am living in Texcoco wich is outside of Mexico City. Mexico City is a cool place to be and the temperature is not that high in the summer. and there is always something to do in Mex City. |
