So do I need a Passport to Drive to Mexico or not? |
Travel Info I have read yes and no,so im not sure.Does anyone know for absolute sure if I need a passport to drive to Mexico.What all do I need to drive there?Also what do I need if I walk across the border instead of drive and catch a cab from there,to spend the day. Travel Tips Currently you do not need a passport to drive or walk into Mexico. The rules on this have not changed and it will be this way at least till the end of the year. All you need is a valid form of ID, a drivers license works just fine for that. Keep in mind that driving or walking would be considered the same, both require an valid ID, it will aways be this way. The rule that was suspended was about flying or going by boat. Since you are not doing either of those, the rule changes do not effect you. However the US government does at some point soon, probably next year, plan to change the rules and require a passport. You would be wise to go down to the post office and fill out the forms. It's taking about 15 weeks to get one right now, and that time length doesn't appear to be getting any shorter. This way you will never have to worry about it again. Others yes you need one, it takes 4 months to process i am going on vacation and we found that out The US government has suspended the need to get a passport for people traveling to Mexico or Canada until September. Because of the new policies, there were great back-ups in the passport process. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story... I'm not sure but I doubt that you need one for short trips like that. Maybe for longer trips where you would need to aquire a visa. YES, get one! It may be possible to go for a day visit to Tijuana or another border town with only a driver's license, but who wants to do that? As in most trips, it's the US border guards on your reentry that will require more of you. Yes you need to get a passport now. I know the statute has been temporarily extended for a couple of months but ultimately, it is still required. Move on it ASAP, believe me, cuz the wait on them is horrible, even paying to have them sooner. :) |
