What is the bus trip like from Mexico City to San Miguel de Allende (SMA)?

Travel Info
We are taking the bus trip sometime in the middle of the day. Is it safe? Scary? Clean? Easy? Hard to find?

(We don't speak Spanish. We speak other languages, but not Spanish!)

Travel Tips
If you take the bus directly from the airport, you have to take the first class service (I think it's Primera Plus) to Queretaro. When you get to QRO, go to the middle building at the bus station and hop on a Flecha Amarilla to San Miguel.

Otherwise, you could take a taxi from the airport to the main bus station (terminal norte), and then get a direct bus to San Miguel.

The first option is easier and cheaper. However, I know two people (one a Mexican citizen) who were targeted and robbed on first class busses. I recommend packing valuables (camera equipment, etc) in your checked luggage and hanging around until you see the luggage being stowed under the bus. Keep your ATM card in a secret (not obvious) place. You shouldn't be paranoid, just safe.

Once you get out of Mexico City, the bus ride is pleasant, with pretty scenery. The whole trip takes 3-4 hours, depending on the traffic (and if the bus driver picks up people along the road between QRO and SMA). Remember to say "gracias" to the driver as you get off the bus.

When you get to San Miguel, take a taxi to your destination (50 pesos, or a little more after dark). I recommend dinner at El Pegaso.

Have fun in San Miguel; it's one of the world's most magical cities. Source(s): Experience. Travelling by bus is one of my favorite experiences in Mexico (is that strange?).
Other Travel Tips
If you smell Tequila while walking by the bus driver then don't board the bus :))
The bus trip should be fine and safe if you take it from the bus station.....it is the city of Mexico everybody is warned about to be careful but you should be alright. They have first class buses and those are very comfortable. San Miguel de Allende is a very peaceful, nice and beautiful colonial town. Good luck and have fun.
