Acapulco or Cancun? |
Travel Info Which is better to you and why? Travel Tips The water is different on both as Acapulco lies in the Pacific Ocean and Cancun in the Caribbean. Therefore Cancun has better water, clear and blue . However, due to the last hurricane season, much of the beach in Cancun was eroded and many rocks are still at the bottom of the ocean so I recommenn going into the water with rubber shoes. Both are great although very touristy. I have been to Cancun and have no interest what so ever in Acapulco. The Pacific ocean is very rough and not so clear. If you like the Yucatan area, go to Puerto Morelos or Riviera Maya instead of Cancun, lot of noisy americans go there to party all night. Others I think Cancun has better places and beaches than Acapulco. It all really depends of what do you prefer to see and do. Acapulco was very popular in the 60s and 70s and was developed with very little planning and control. Geographically is nicely located close to mountains and jungle. Unfortunately part of the no planning is the sewer. Most buildings, including hotels and restaurants dump their waste water to the sea. Consequently the sea water is almost off limits. Some new buildings treat their water now and some others have been forced to extend their pipes further on the sea, but is still not a nice thing to experience. Acapulco has very nice little towns and colonial architecture close by. It has been inhabited for many years. It has plenty of clubs and bars. Cancun was developed in the 80s and became very popular in the 90s. From the beginning it was planned and since it was practically empty it was not difficult to do. Cancun has no hills or mountains, but the sand is very fine white and clean. Cancun is located in the Caribbean and its water is a beautiful turquoise color. Sand: White and fine in Cancun, brown and rough in Acapulco; Water: Brown and heavily polluted in Acapulco, turquoise and clean in Cancun; Party: tons of more options in Acapulco Shopping about same Acapulco has nice hills and small mountains Cancun is flat. Wow they are SO different, its really going to depend on you! If you are looking for tranquil, laid back, quiet then NEITHER of these places are for you! Both are crowded, HUGE nightlife scenes and massive traffic. (If you want "tranquil" then check out Huatulco or Ixtapa-Zihuatenejo, near Acapulco or Cozumel near Cancun.) International vs Mexican - Cancun is the most "international" resort city in Mexico! Everybody speaks English and everything is modern and well, "international." If you get drunk and forget where you are, it will take you awhile to figure out if you are in the Florida Keys, Nice, Majorca or Ibiza.... Acapulco is the number one tourist destination on Earth for Mexicans. All the best MEXICAN nightclubs, singers, rock bands are found in Acapulco. If you prefer to party with drunken Gringos, its Cancun! If you prefer to party with drunken Mexicans, its Acapulco! Cost - If you prefer the "International" flavor to the "Mexican" one, you are going to PAY FOR IT! The cost of hotels, restaurants, nightclubs taxis etc is between 150% to 300% HIGHER in Cancun. Not only that, but if you look carefully just off the tourist strips in Acapulco you can find really low cost but decent, food, lodging, clinics, phamacies, shops etc. at real non-tourist Mexican prices. The closest places to Cancun to find these cheap things will be about 300 miles away! Beaches - while it is true that Cancun's white sand beaches are better, they are among the finest on Earth! Acapulco has excellent beaches as well and in fact has been famous for its beaches for well over a 1000 years! (the pollution on the beaches/ocean in Acapulco has been cleaned up for years now) So there you have it: International, high-class, tempered, expensive = CANCUN Mexican, egalitarian, exhuberant, economical = ACAPULCO Your call. I like them both, but I really prefer Acapulco, its just more ......well ......Mexican! |
