Questions about Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. Help please? |
Travel Info Will be spending the month of July. Does makeup stay on? Is it pointless to take blowdryer, curling iron, flat iron? What are some things that cannot be missed in Merida, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen? What is the best way to get around? Are there dress codes at bars and clubs? Personal experience please. No websites unless they are REALLY good! Anything helpful welcome. Thanks Travel Tips I can't help you with the make-up/hair questions but yeah it's hot. I'm not much of a club person so I'm not sure about dress code and certainly I've never had any trouble getting served in a bar there but again, I'm not generally going to the kind of places that I would expect to have a dress code, nor am I cruising around town in a bathing suit with no shoes and shirt so I've never encountered a dress code but that doesn't mean they don't exist. In Merida: The Anthropological Museum The main plaza has several key historic buildings including: Cathedral of San Idelfonso (1556-1599), the oldest cathedral on the American continent. Casa de Montejo (1542), the former home of the conqueror of Yucatan. You have to see the carvings on the front of this place, they have a coat of arms (likely his family's, I'm not sure) but flanking that they have two Spanish conquistadors in armor standing on the heads of Mayan's. (Just to remind the Mayans who was running the show now I guess) Palacio de Gobierno (1892), on the north side, houses 27 murals by Fernanco Castro Pacheco Palacio Municipal (1735), Merida's Town Hall You also want to check out the mansions on Paseo Montejo. It's an impressive walk. Around Merida, you should also look at seeing some haciendas and some ruins. For Ruins Uxmal is close by, as is Chichen Itza both large and impressive. There's many, many ruins in the area. For haciendas, the only one I've really seen more than just the outside of is Yaxcopoil on the way to Uxmal, it's interesting but not very well keep up. I'm certain some of the others in the area are more lavish, especially the ones that now operate as hotels. For getting around Merida, we rent a car but I know the bus service between towns is very good, not sure about within Merida but I suspect it's likely good. I've used busses in smaller towns and they were cheap and fairly regular so I'm guessing that it would be the same in a big city. Between Merida and Cancun are some neat places, I personally think that Izamal is very nice, Valladolid also good. North of Valladolid are the ruins of Ek Balam, they are impressive. Also, near Valladolid is the Dzitnup cenote, you need to see a cenote if you never have beore and that's a famous one, but there are many in the region so if that one doesn't fit into your schedule you'll have other options. For PDC, the shopping and night life is great along 5th ave. Cozumel has great diving/snorkeling. Beaches are great in both of these areas. For getting around the PDC area, colectivos are a cheap and effective way to get around to hotels/resorts that aren't right in the city. Places like X'caret will have their own bus if you want to go there. And for websites, this one is REALLY good: http://www.yucatantoday.com/ Others No makeup will stand in the heat and the humidity of the summer months. Lipstick and waterproof mascara are enough. Contact the hotels you will be staying to know if they have blowdriers in the bathrooms, as many do. Otherwise, I would not bother taking any items with me. Let your hair and skin have a vacation too! Don't know much about clubs, but please be careful and don't drink too much. in cozumel an playa del carmen theres no dress code, a top and skirt works, the flat iron and all that stuff works but there are very windy zones, the make up yes it stay on just check that its waterprof, because teh suet. In merida, the downtown, and also its near to chichen itza and uxmal arqueological zones, in cozumel the reef (its the second largest in the world) and the beach, in playa theres a lot of things. HAve fun ! |
