I want to travel from Merida Mx to Belize?

Travel Info
I would appreciate any hints on the best way to get from Merida Mexico to Belize? Flights seem to involve going through Houston so I would like to go by train or even drive. Is it too far (or dangerous) to drive?

Travel Tips
Hi there,

Flights can be a good option, you just need to consider if there is any time to wait at IAH, that is where you'll find your answer...

Driving can be a really nice trip.

From Merida you need to drive to Tulum through Cancun. That is in a perfectly mantained 4 lanes highway (2 forth and 2 back). In this leg of the trip you must consider to keep your speed limits as this roads are built of hydraulic concrete (that is an increase in the friction of your tires to the ground, which could end in an exploded tire if you go above the 110 km/hr).

From Merida to Cancun is an approximate 3 hrs drive and you can add 4 - 4 and a half more to Belize.

After Tulum roads are good but from time to time you'll find two ways areas. I suggest to drive during daylight.
Gas stations are not a problem, still do not miss refueling, buying snacks, using the toilet in Tulum.

Once in the border, there is an untold or published procedure to enter the country if you're driving... Let's say you owe me one by explaining this since it can save you about hour and a half!...
When you cross the bridge between both countries you can see a Casino right in front. Well, just across from it you'll see a Quarantine stand in which you're supposed to spray your vehicle (no one tells you that). Then you follow the road to the Border Authorities Station where you must park, get inside the building with your ID's and vehicle's papers to get an entry registration. When finished, ONE person walks back to cross the vehicle and the rest of the party walks directly to the other side where they can be picked up. All this, with the info I just gave you should take you no more than 15 mins together...

From that point you're just 5 minutes away from Corozal and about 1 hour away to Belize city...

My suggestion to any tourist, do not miss the San Pedro Island!!! It is completely gorgeous!!!! Worth to stay at least 3 nites... Source(s): I live in Cancun and have driven several times to both places, Merida and Belize
Other Travel Tips
A friend once droved from NY City all the way to Merida and back, it was all okay.
Okay once in Merida you can either take a bus (they have first class buses), or drive to Chetumal, Quintana Roo. This is the Capital of the state and it borders Belize. It is about a five hour drive. I've been there... it should go well.
If you will be driving from Houston to Merida I do recommend you be careful in Mex City and even Cuernavaca if you have to crossed through these cities, all the other cities are safer. It should be a fun trip, enjoy yourself and good luck.
roybcun pretty much said it all. It is a great drive I would recommend it... DON'T fly. What a waste. There are ruins, cenotes, and other things on the way if you like to stop and smell the roses. There is enough to do on the way to keep you busy for a few days or weeks... that's not including all the things to do near Cancun.
We recently moved to Belize from the States and we just took the bus through Mexico all the way into Belize. The buses in Mexico are great - comfortable with movies, etc. It is the way to go!
