I know it is not May 5th (cinco de Mayo). That celebrates a battle (Puebla), not independence. That is in the middle of September, I think it is the 16th.

Anthony's got it - They declared the republic on September 16 1825. Huge Mexican holiday, whereas Cinco de Mayo is mostly for bordertowns and gringos (and the town of Puebla, of course)
