Usually there are long and short term renting. Long term renting means an automatic 5 year contract which can be extended or not by either party at the end of each year, some have provisos that may include rent increase yearly some may not. Anyone that wants to rent you their property for 11 months (which used to be the law) is now mistaken, the law says you are legally allowed to rent for 5 years with mutual renewal every year. Usually you can leave when you want with 1 month notice to quit, but the owner usually must give you 3 months notice at the end of the year, if they want you to move. It is a case of getting a gestor to draw up a contract, not buying one in the tobaconist (which is where you can, believe it or not buy them) Hope this clarifies something for you.
