Moving to spain? |
Travel Info How much money do i need in order to move to spain and be able to live there? Is the cost of living in spain higher than the U.S? What's the median people have to make in order to live a decent life there? Travel Tips i can try and answer this question, but cant answer it fully, as i have lived in spain and england but not the US, so im n ot sure what the cost of living is like in the US but i will give you figures where i can. In order to move to spain to live you will need quite a bit of money to 'get you going' it depends on where you want to live and wether you are buying or renting. if you are renting you will have to give at least a months non refundable deposit and pay fees to the agent that finds you a place if you use one. for renting properties on the costa del sol have a look at some prices here; www.surinenglish.com or for costa blanca try; www.costablanca-news.com you can also look for property to buy in these papers. there are also job adverts in them, although many do not have how much you will get paid. you must get paid in spain a minimum of 585euros a month. but after that it depends on what you do... i mean if you are starting a job in an office or estate agents you may get 650euros a month, because you will be 'in training ' so to speak, but if you have worked in the field before you can make 1000euros sih in the same job. id say generally foreighners who can speak spanish and english CAN (not necessarily will) make 1200-1400euros a month, but can make as little as 600euros. the cost of living in spain is quite low if you live like a spaniard, as in dont go out drinking till all hours ogf the morning, adn eat home cooked food instead of mcdonalds and kebabs etc..... i have friends in spain who make 800euros(after tax) a month without working to hard, they still go out and have fun, and are very very happy. if there is anything else i can help you with, or you feel i have not explained something peroperly, feel free to email me, XXXDebsh Others Hey--I've lived in Spain for the past 8 months and kept track of all my expenditures on an excel spreadsheet, so I can give you a pretty good idea of the minimum you need to have. Note: This is pretty much the barest minimum you can expect to spend, as I cut expenses everywhere I could. Note also that I lived in Malaga (in Andalucia), but if you're going to live somewhere like Barcelona or Madrid, it will be a LOT more expensive. My Rent = 125 euros a month. This was a very small bedroom in a very low cost area of town in an apartment shared with 4 other people. Finding rent this low is very difficult--In Malaga the average minimum you can expect to pay is 250 euros. This does not include water, gas, electricity, telephone, or community expenses. Food = 200 euros a month. I almost never go out to eat (perhaps once a month), I don't go to parties at night, and I make home-cooked meals. Transportation = 20 euros a month (student rate bus card with unlimited rides for a month--if you're not a student it will be at least 30 euros). If you have a car, gas prices currently range from 90 cents to 1.15 per liter (multiply x 4 for a gallon). Communication = 30 euros a month. It depends on what types of communication you want to have. A mobile phone costs 24-30 euro cents a minute. Internet costs 20-40 euros a month. Internet cafes charge 1-2 euros per hour. With these and other random unavoidable expenses, my cheapest month cost me approximately 500 euros and my most expensive month was 900 (that month I did a bit of traveling). Note that the current exchange rate between dollars and euros will hurt you. On my last bank withdrawal, 300 euros was about 400 dollars. So always keep in mind that your money is going faster than you think. Hope this helps! |
