Has anyone been to a Bullfight in Spain? If so, where and what was your opinion?

Travel Info
I ask because there is much more to it than the mortal killing of a bull, and because of the spectacle that it is.

Travel Tips
Saw the Bullfights in Seville a few years ago. The ritual, showmanship, spectacle as well as the audience was interesting from a historical, cultural and sociologicial perspective and the bravery of the matodors was impressive but utimately the cruelity and unfariness to the bull left me cold and I left after the second fight. I am very glad to have seen a bullfight (as a student of Spanish culture and frequent visitor), but would never go again.

Yes, I have been to Bullfights in both Spain and Mexico and it was hard for me to watch because I am an animal lover and my heart went out to the terrible sounds the bull made... you never SEE that in the travelogs.
Bull fighting is very closely associated with Spain and can trace its origins back to 711 A.D. This is when the first bullfight took place in celebration for the crowning of King Alfonso VIII. It is very popular in Spain with several thousand Spaniards flocking to their local bull-ring each week. It is said that the total number of people watching bullfights in Spain reaches one million every year.

Well Well!

According to the first contributor, and I quote: '

'I have been to Bullfights in both Spain and Mexico and it was hard for me to watch because I am an animal lover'.

This tells us all about animal lovers.

They subsidise the ritual slaughter of animals by going to see bull fights. Not having REALLY understood what it is all about this poor person went twice to see another 6 bulls killed.

I love animal lovers!

To answer your question. Yes there is a lot of spectacle and such. Strangely, a bull fight proceeds not unlike a Mass!

Look at the so-called secret filming at Barcelona clip on Youtube to see the worst that can happen other than someone getting hurt.

I've been to a few, the good; the bad; and the ugly, and find it all strangely facinating.
Have a look at youtube (ugh!) and the Las Ventas (the Madrid bull ring) website
