From your question I can see you are coming with children. First of all you need to decide what you are looking for. Big city, culture, beach? Do you want to visit the south or the north of the country?

I have two children myself, 12 and 6 years old, and have done quite a lot of traveling with them. My experience is that big cities are not a big hit with kids. They easily get tired and bored. The south of Spain can be suffocatingly hot in the summer and jammed with tourists.

I would recommend you to look into the north of Spain. San Sebastian is a beautiful place. It is a small city located on the shores on the Bay of Biscay. I recently went for a weekend visit with my husband and we really liked it. We have also come here with the kids a few times and they also liked it.

Where in Spain are you going? You should answer that question first. Do you speak the language, if so you will get around better. Madrid and Barcelona are the places with the best hotels and shopping, they are the largest metropolitan areas. There's also lots of art and history in these places and are the most visited.

Lets be honest. Not knowing where exactly you will go to Spain makes it hard to answer your question. My advice, get a very good guide book (Lonely Planet or Rough Guide for ex.), buy a bottle of red wine and sit down and read. All you need to know is written down and you can make plans for a great, enjoyable trip you will never forget.
