Travel Info
Im going to Barcelona this summer. Im quite excited, due to ive never left the U.S., but from being part spanish ethnicity my aunt told me, she is from Madrid, that they do not speak spanish is Barcelona, but Catalan. I am fleunt in spanish due to 3 years of spanish and being part spanish, but I do not know french. Is there any way I can sort of learn to speak Catalan in the remaining 2 months without buying any sort of equiptment. I mean my aunt also said they speak spanish, but prefer not to. Any help would be appreciated. Gracias.

Travel Tips
It's not like that at all. First of all, in Catalu帽a both Spanish and Catalan are official. Meaning people speak both, and especially Spanish in Barcelona. I'm not catalan but have been living here for a while and I never had a problem. Not even the first months, and I was taking subjects in Catalan. At first I couldn't speak it but I could understand it perfectly. And now I'm fluent. It's easy to learn, a mixture of Spanish, French and Italian. Just like Gallego (spoken in north west of Spain), also easy to understand, and a mixture of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.

Spanish is speak as much as Catalan in Barcelona. The majority of the people speak Spanish specially the old ones. Barcelona is my favorite city and I have family in Barcelona, Madrid and Oviedo. If you speak Spanish don't expect any problem is the communication with the locals. Nerveless the signs and some menus in restaurants are writing in Catalan but is easy to understand because the similarity with the Spanish. You can also find that many people understand the English.
Buen viaje !
You will get by with Spanish and English in Barcelona
Almost everyone in Barcelona speaks perfect Spanish.

There is absolutely no reason to waste time learning Catalan, it will only mess up your Spanish.

You will hear Catalan in the street, but I strongly suggest that you ignore it. You will find that Catalans know instinctively if you are a Spanish or Catalan speaker.
don't worry about catalan. 99.9% of people speaks spanish in barcelona. Usually, you can find the menu (for exemple) write in both languages, otherwise ask to somebody, i'm sure they'll help you.
I live in barcelona.
