Where is the best place to visit in Switzerland?

Travel Info
I will have 2 days to visit Switzerland this summer when backpacking Europe, what is the best place (city) to visit and the one thing I have to see?

Travel Tips
I travel every year several times to Switzerland and have read probably all guide books about the country in my native language. I have just been there two weeks ago. I would suggest three options:

- For the true taste of typical Switzerland try Lucerne and Vierwaldtstaettersee (you can take a ship to go around the lake or from Lucerne to Stockhorn, where you can take a walk to a hotel with some of the most stunning views in the country), then go to Berne, Thun and Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen Valley, from which you can take either a bit pricey but fantastic trip by train to Jungfraujoch (the highest railway station in Europe, over 12000 feet and certainly the country's top attraction), or a bit cheaper cable car to Schilthorn (revolving restaurant sorrounded by snowy peaks at 9000 feet, featured in "In Her Majesty's Service" James Bond movie). You should easily fit these within two days.

- For the most beautiful Switzerland go to Lugano, Locarno, Gandria and Ascona in Italian speaking Ticino.

- For the most convenient trip (if you do not have a car) take a train with stop-overs between Geneva and Villeneuve, stopping at places such as Montreux, Lausanne, Vevey, Nyon, Chateau Chillon, Morges.

Do not bother about places like Zermatt with Matterhorn or Graubunden - they are too remote and would require more time than just two days.

Highlights which I would recommend if they are on your way: St. Gallen (fantastic Benedictine monastery and library), Stein am Rhein, Gruyeres (probably the most beautiful village in the world), Murten (well preserved walled town). Places which I am not particularly fond of are Zurich, Geneva and Lausanne (maybe apart from the lovely Ouchy by the lake with the Olympic museum). They seem to be too big to have the true taste of the country.

There are lots of beautiful places, especially if you want to go up into the mountains. My favorite is called Wengen, a town at the base of the Jungfrau, which is one of the most beautiful mountains in Switzerland. There are no cars in this town. You can hike up to it from the Lauterbrunnen valley south of Interlaken. It is a ski resort in the winter. From the town you can take the train up to the glacier by the Jungfrau. The train goes through the Eiger on the way up. In addition there are plenty of beautiful hiking paths from Wengen. Many of the other mountain villages are beautiful also, but Wengen is my favorite. Zermatt is also very nice and very popular and from it you can hike up to the base of the Matterhorn. Look at the pictures on the web and choose the place which looks nicest to you.
Do not even try. Two days is not sufficient to see anything.
Don't know which town you will be arriving, but if you travel to Geneva, stay ther for the two days. Plenty to see.
But 2 days in Switzerland......hahaha, it's like to say: " I am going to the USA for two days, what are the best places to go see"
Forget the cities if you're backpacking "Europe"--no Swiss cities compare to Paris or Rome. Go to a little mountaintop village like Andermatt or Bergun.
