High German, however, is used in writing (such as signs, newspapers etc.), so if you speak High German, you will be understood, regardless of which canton you are in. Others There is nowhere in Switzerland where anyone native will speak high German. The closest to halfway understanding what anyone is on about would be right at the border to Germany. So if you go to Basel and you have rudimentary knowlege of German you will most probably understand them.
