What should I take to Cuba for gifts for the resort staff? |
Travel Info What should I take to Cuba for gifts for the resort staff? Travel Tips How about a nice box of Virginia cigars? Others culumbian cocaine visas some cigars.. Soaps, shampoo, hair conditioner, skin creams, disposable razors. Do not take them tooth brushes/tooth paste. When we were there that's what someone was giving the staff & they were insulted. I was appalled that someone would actually give a tooth brush as a tip at dinner. If you tip them in Cuban peso's it gives them the money to spend. They cannot spend American dollars etc. so only tip in peso's. I was there in 1999, so my advice may not be up to date. But at that time the bar/restaurant staff really appreciated one dollar tips. The chambermaids were keen on things like good hair products - shampoo, conditioner, gel, mousse and so on. Also perfume. And tampons and high quality sanitary pads. For the kids, pens, coloured pencils and any kind of silly toys. We just left a selection of stuff in each hotel. And when we walked around Havana and kids came up to us we gave them whatever kids stuff we had. The important thing to remember about Cuba though is that, although people are lacking in the kind of consumer goods we take for granted, they have other things to be proud of. Cuba has an amazing public health system, and a very good education system. Everyone has enough to eat. Not a a great choice of things, but enough good healthy food to keep them going. The infant mortality rate in Cuba is lower than in the US. The adult literacy rate is higher than in the US. I know where I'd rather live if I were poor. Many people might not like Castro, but he would not have deserted his people like Bush did when Katrina hit New Orleans. |
