Why are people sometimes kept onboard landed airplanes?

Travel Info
Sometimes it's weather and now they had some pathetic terrorist attacks in UK, but either way why can't they just let people get off the plane if it isn't going anywhere? If it's just about safety, then why not have emergency passenger stair trucks available and alternate exits to the airports? I can just imagine the horror of sitting on a plane for hours and not moving! I think I might go crazy?

Travel Tips
because of the stupid schedule they have to keep..just in case they have to leave right there.. not to have more delays..i sat on plane for 4 hours waiting for the rain to end.. it smells bad.!!..(the plan was parked at the gate) Source(s): experience

Fortunatley I have never been in that situation. But usually there is no gate available for them to be loaded off. They can't use the "stairs" because it would be dangerous for passengers to walk across the tarmack with all the planes around. And also the airlines do not want to be sued if something were to happen while they were walking on the tarmack.
It all depends on the situation.

Probably everyone else besides the passengers wants the flight to get going too. There are many reasons why the plane may be delayed. It's better for the passengers to be waiting so that the plane can get going asap.

Who's going to pay for all these trucks, exits, and the people that are needed for these?

People rarely wait on planes for hours (except when they're flying).

It sounds like you had a bad experience. Maybe you could clarify it a bit for us all instead of complaining about nothing.
It's happened to me three times in the last three weeks.

First time was because once we were loaded (late) they determined that we couldn't land at our destination airport - storms. They just kept us on the plane (2 hours) and rolled back to the gate for more fuel.

Second time they were ready for takeoff when the fuel filter light went on, and we had to get that looked at (2.5 hours).

Third time we were in the air when they found out they coudn't land because of storms at destination airport. They landed in another city and refueled - 3 hours.

It's not terrible, unless the rude jerk in front of you reclines his seat into your space. FYI - always buy a magazine, bottle of water and snack once past security - they usually don't serve food or drink during the delay.
In cases like the attack in Scotland, It is easier for passengers on inbound planes to be accounted for by airport personnel who are already dealing with evacuating terminals and security would probably want to re-check those travelers who have not boarded any out bound planes( in case there are more than the two terrorists who may have fled into the airport and are trying to conceal themselves among the travelers.
